Pro Tips for Riding Transit to UCLA

Santa Monica Big Blue Bus

Is your drive to campus stressing you out? Consider switching to public transit! Not only can it save you money, but it also offers a more relaxed and sustainable way to get to UCLA. Here’s how you can make the most out of your transit commute.

Get a Subsidized UCLA Transit Pass

Whether you live near or far from campus, our transit passes provide Bruins with convenient access to numerous transit agencies across L.A. County. This includes those that directly serve UCLA: Los Angeles Metro bus and rail lines, Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, Culver CityBusAntelope Valley TransitSanta Clarita TransitLong Beach Transit, and LADOT Commuter Express.

Students have access to fare-free rides with the Bruin U-Pass for undergrads and the Bruin Grad Pass for eligible graduate students. All other Bruins can purchase the heavily discounted Commuter All Access Pass, and can even try it free for a quarter through the Bruin Commuter Transit Benefit program!

Once you get your pass, you can transfer it to your mobile wallet for added convenience.

Plan Your Route

Make sure you know the route you're taking, including the specific bus line, stop where you'll board, and any transfers you need to make. Planning is easy with tools like Google Maps or the Transit app with real-time tracking.

What to Bring

A phone wallet may be handy if you have a physical pass so you're ready to tap it when you board. Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated on your trip, which can be refilled at a number of hydration stations on campus. Keep yourself occupied with some reading material, listen to music or podcasts, or watch your favorite shows on your phone. Just make sure to use headphones or earbuds so you're not disturbing other passengers.

Stay Safe

Safety should always be top of mind when riding public transit. If you're reading or using your phone, stay alert by looking up from time to time. Keep your belongings close to you and don't sit near exits as that's where "snatch and grabs" are most likely to occur. When waiting for a bus make sure you're on the sidewalk and away from the curb, or standing away from the edge of the platform when waiting for a train.

Now that you're ready to ride like a pro, pledge to try public transit during Sustainable Transportation Month. You’ll be entered to win a prize such as a gift card to Target or AMC Theatres, or even UCLA Football tickets!
