The Hitchhiking Bruin’s Guide to Taking Public Transit in Los Angeles

Bruin ghosts taking the bus

Oh, the places Bruins can go with their UCLA-issued transit pass – for commuting to campus and exploring Los Angeles. Bruin U-Pass, Bruin Grad Pass, and the Employee Commuter All-Access Transit Pass provide unlimited fare-free rides across L.A. County for undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty and staff. Wondering how to start a journey? Here’s a guide to get you going, along with rider tips for using the bus and rail, and some good spots to hit when not at school or work.

Learn more about public transit, and enjoy some treats and giveaways, during Sustainable Transportation Month at a Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center Outreach Event on Monday, Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., a Gateway Plaza Outreach Event on Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the Sustainable Transportation Month Fair in Wilson Plaza on Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Once you are ready to try a trip on transit, take the Sustainable Transportation Month pledge to enter to win a prize, like a 2-night stay at the UCLA Lake Arrowhead Lodge and Target and AMC Theatres gift cards.

Ticket To Ride
Register for your UCLA transit pass every quarter – summer included – at bruintap.ucla.edu. Get a physical TAP card and pick it up at the Central Ticket Office on campus, or use the TAP app to add a virtual TAP card to your phone. Once a TAP card is acquired, register for the pass each quarter to reload fare.

With a UCLA transit pass, Bruins have access to several local and commuter transit agencies, including LA Metro Bus & Rail, on-demand rideshare service Metro Micro, Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, Culver CityBus, Antelope Valley Transit, Santa Clarita Transit, Long Beach Transit, LADOT Commuter Express, and more!

Where To?
Plan out your trip with Google Maps, Apple Maps, the Transit or Moovit Apps, and www.metro.net. See what transit lines you can take, departure and arrival times, and any service alerts.

All Aboard
Roll to your destination with these rider tips. Several transit providers may service a stop, so be clear which line you are looking for. Wave to the driver to let them know you are waiting. Once aboard, be sure to let the driver know you want to get off before you arrive at your destination. All buses have a cord or pressure strip you can activate to indicate you want to get off at the next posted stop.

Give yourself enough time: you can’t always account for any traffic delays or bad weather.
