UCLA Transportation has once again been recognized for its sustainability efforts as winner of the NAFA Fleet Management Association 2024 Green Fleet Award. The honor from the vehicle fleet industry's largest membership association recognizes organizations that execute groundbreaking and inventive programs for their green initiatives, as well as peak-performing fleet sustainability efforts.
Ranked third in the nation among university vehicle operations and 40th overall, UCLA has made significant strides in adopting electric vehicles, and now has a diverse fleet featuring a significant portion (40%) of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs). UCLA Transportation has also downsized its fleet in recent years, from nearly 1,100 vehicles in 2021 to 886 today, enhancing efficiency and sustainability even as the campus continues to expand.
These initiatives have helped reduce fuel consumption, lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and enhance air quality, fostering a greener campus environment.
To further these efforts, the university is currently investing in zero-emission charging technology for its fleet, from dynamic and static wireless charging to hydrogen fuel cell microgrids. UCLA is also converting its entire bus fleet to zero-emission by 2029, which will reduce BruinBus' overall GHG emissions by more than 120 metric tons.
This latest award positions UCLA Transportation as a leader in utilizing advanced transportation technologies to positively impact the environment.
