Tap, tap, tap.
What's that sound? Over a million fare-free transit trips taken by UCLA undergraduate students all over Los Angeles these last two years thanks to Bruin U-Pass — the public transit program from UCLA Transportation currently up for renewal.
Not on board yet, Bruins? Have a seat: Bruin U-Pass launched in the fall of 2023, the product of a Universal Access Transit Pass Referendum passing in an Undergraduate Students Association Council (USAC) spring election, granting the entire undergraduate population at UCLA unlimited access to L.A.'s public transit system for a small quarterly fee.
For a nominal charge only three times a year, Bruins can take limitless rides – at no additional cost – on all the local and long-distance lines serving the campus, which include LA Metro (bus and rail, plus on-demand rideshare service Metro Micro), Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, Culver CityBus, Antelope Valley Transit Agency, Long Beach Transit, Santa Clarita Transit, LADOT Commuter Express, and more, in fact: thirteen different transit agencies in total.
Physical or virtual TAP card transit pass in hand, undergraduates can get out of the residential halls, leave their off-campus apartment, or use the pass for their commute to school to reach places across L.A. County – be it to hit the beach in Santa Monica, shop at the outdoor mall in Century City, for a bite on Sawtelle, to see art and explore the garden at the nearby Getty Museum, to different concert venues, or a favorite away from UCLA study spot.
Not just affordable, Bruin U-Pass supports accessibility and sustainability, providing all students with a means to get where they need to go, car or no car, that is environmentally friendly.
Bruin U-Passes are still available for the spring, with registration for the summer in less than a month, starting June 2. Also coming around the corner is another USAC election with a Bruin U-Pass referendum on the ballot. If approved, the pass, which will expire in the spring of 2026, would be renewed and extended through 2030, with a fee increase to $6.80 starting in the fall of 2026. Voting on my.UCLA.edu runs May 9 through May 16.
