October is Sustainable Transportation Month at UCLA, a perfect time to explore eco-friendly ways to commute to campus. Whether you live five or 50 miles away, there are sustainable transportation options available that can help you save money, reduce your carbon footprint, and enjoy a healthier lifestyle.
Pledge to try sustainable transportation during October, and you’ll be entered to win great prizes such as gift cards to Target and AMC Theatres or UCLA Football tickets!
Public Transit
Let someone else do the driving when you take public transit! Skip the traffic and make the most of your commute by relaxing, studying, catching up on sleep, or diving into a good book. Seven transit agencies provide direct service to the UCLA campus: Los Angeles Metro bus and rail lines, Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, Culver CityBus, Antelope Valley Transit, Santa Clarita Transit, Long Beach Transit, and LADOT Commuter Express.
Students have access to fare-free rides with the Bruin U-Pass for undergrads and the Bruin Grad Pass for eligible graduate students. All other Bruins can purchase the heavily discounted Commuter All Access Pass, and can even try it free for a quarter through the Bruin Commuter Transit Benefit program!
Biking
Combine your commute with a healthy dose of exercise when you bike to campus. UCLA has miles of bike lanes, over 3,500 bike parking spaces, and seven do-it-yourself bike repair stands, among many other resources for bicyclists.
Don't have your own bike? No problem! Metro Bike Share stations are conveniently located on campus, in Westwood Village, and at graduate student housing. Want a bike of your own? Our popular Earn-A-Bike program returns on Oct. 7, and lets eligible employees and graduate students swap a parking permit for a free bike package worth $900!
Carpool
Share a ride to campus and breeze through traffic by using the high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes. You'll also save money by sharing the cost of gas and a discounted carpool permit! We make it easy to find a carpool buddy with the UCLA Trip Planner, just enter your starting point and destination to find a carpool near you or form your own. Be sure to review our carpool planning guide for more details.
Vanpool
Just like carpooling, vanpooling to UCLA is an excellent option for those who live farther from campus and want to share their commute with others. Participants privately lease a seven or ten-seat vehicle and commute together from a common pickup location. They have access to HOV lanes, toll lanes, and vehicle upkeep and maintenance services. Visit our Vanpool page for more information.
Walking
If you live closer to campus, consider walking and reap the rewards of better health and a cleaner environment. Studies have shown that incorporating walking into your daily routine can enhance both your physical fitness and mental clarity, all while reducing your carbon footprint. We have tips to get you started and keep you safe while walking.
