How to Affordably Travel Long-Distance From UCLA

FlixBus Parked outside of a building

Want to get away this summer but trying to make it fit in your budget? With gas prices at record highs, you don't have to drive to arrive at a great vacation destination. If you live at or near UCLA, here are some ways you can travel long-distance affordably from campus.

Amtrak Thruway Service

Amtrak is known for their trains, but they also provide the Thruway bus service to help you reach their stations. Connect directly from campus with the San Joaquins and Pacific Surfliner trains to Central Valley destinations including Fresno and Sacramento, as well as the San Francisco Bay Area, or travel the coast to places like Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. Even if you don't connect with a train, you can still ride the Thruway to Bakersfield, Santa Clarita-Newhall, and Van Nuys from UCLA/Westwood.

Travel affordably and comfortably with FlixBus directly from their stop at Gayley and Strathmore. Whether you're traveling to cities such as San Francisco, San Diego, or Las Vegas, FlixBus will get you there while you enjoy free WiFi and onboard entertainment.

Culver CityBus to LAX

If you're flying out of LAX and need a ride to the airport, Culver CityBus can get you there for $1 or less! Take Line 6 from campus or Westwood Village to the Metro C Line (Green) Aviation Station where you can connect with a free shuttle to the airport. Regular fare is $1 but UCLA affiliates can ride Culver CityBus for only $0.70 with the UCLA Co-Pay when paying with a UCLA TAP Card, or $0.80 with cash by showing your BruinCard to the driver. If you have any UCLA transit pass, unlimited rides on Culver CityBus are already included!
