Vehicles are behind most of the emissions entering our air. Instead of contributing to pollution, go green by riding a bike or taking public transportation. Here are ways to travel greener for Earth Day — and reasons to embrace sustainable alternatives beyond April.
Per the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, a typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons of CO2 annually, necessitating a change in transportation habits to not further fuel climate change. Collective action — more of us leaving our cars behind — can have a positive impact.
LA Metro is celebrating Earth Day on Monday, April 22 with free rides for everyone on the system's buses, trains, Bike Share, and Metro Micro. Fare will not be collected on Metro Bus and Rail all day. Shifting from a car to public transportation can reduce up to 2.2 tons of carbon emissions annually per individual, according to the United Nations.
Taking transit even for just one day helps improve air quality and reduce your carbon footprint.
Metro Bike Share will also free 30-minute rides with the promo code 042224. Select 1-Ride at any Metro Bike Share kiosk, online, or in the Metro Bike Share app, and enter the code at checkout. A credit or debit card is required. The promo code may be redeemed multiple times throughout the day. Bike rides are an additional $1.75 for each half hour after the first 30 minutes.
According to research from the University of Oxford, choosing a bike over a car just once a day can reduce the average person’s transportation-related emissions by 67%.
For Metro Micro, use code “EarthDay24” to book your ride. When you Go Metro in any form, you’re a part of the climate change solution.
You can also take a train ride free on April 22 for a better tomorrow on Metrolink.
In addition to protecting the environment, sustainable transportation has other benefits. It reduces traffic congestion, offers physical and mental health benefits, and helps households save thousands of dollars yearly.
