Electric Personal Mobility Device Registration Arrives at UCLA

Steered by UCLA Transportation, in partnership with UCLA Residential Life, UCLA Housing, UCLA Fire, and the UCLA Police Department, a new registration program for the personal electric mobility devices of Bruins will help ensure safer riding and prevent theft.

E-bikes, e-scooters, and e-skateboards are everywhere — especially on college campuses, as they offer an affordable, efficient, and eco-friendly way to zip around. They can be a good transportation option — when operated responsibly, which includes being UL certified. The safety standard, which becomes mandatory for any electric personal mobility device at UCLA this fall, safeguards against fire and electrical risks.

Registration also creates a record of an e-device belonging to a Bruin, becoming an important tool to help prevent theft and return lost or stolen devices to their registered owners.

UCLA’s program, formally rolling out in the fall quarter, is being introduced to university housing residents this winter, with the entire campus community invited to also register ahead of the fall at this time. Go to Personal Mobility Device Registration on the UCLA Transportation website to get started. The online registration process includes:

  1. A review of current traffic laws, riding tips, where to park on campus, and guidance on the safe charging, storage, and use of one’s device.
  2. Providing the personal device’s model, color, year, and serial number, and confirmation of UL certification.

The last step to completion is scheduling an appointment with UCLA Transportation at 555 Westwood Plaza. Once UL certification is confirmed and information verified as accurate, a sticker will be affixed to your device.

On Friday, Jan. 30, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Bruin Plaza patio outside Bruin Plate, Bruins can learn more about the program. Device verification and stickering will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 10, and Thursday, Feb. 19, at Sunset Village Plaza.

All UCLA students, faculty, and staff are welcome and encouraged to pre-register their UL-certified e-mobility devices as soon as possible, before the Nov. 20 deadline. Bonus: Complete the process by March 31 and be entered into a raffle to win a $75 Amazon gift card. In addition to a chance to win a gift card, the first 50 students to complete device verification at an on-campus event are eligible to receive a free helmet (while supplies last).
