Equitable, affordable, accessible, reliable, and safe — the kind of service public transportation strives to provide everyone. The individual who took a stand sitting down, civil rights activist Rosa Parks, is honored every year nationwide on her birthday with a day of action designated as Transit Equity Day.
On December 1, 1955, Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama — an act of protest to demand an end to segregation on public transportation systems. The seminal event made her a key figure in the civil rights movement, fighting for equal rights and justice and against discrimination.
To highlight the importance of fair, accessible public transportation for all people the following transportation providers will offer fare-free trips for Transit Equity Day on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
Providing equitable access to high-quality, reliable, and affordable transit service for everyone is a civil right, so in honor of Transit Equity Day, LA Metro will offer free rides on all Metro buses, trains, Metro Bike Share, and Metro Micro on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
