5 Reasons Spring is the Best Time for Bike Riding

Seize the season and start biking! The longer days, rising temperatures, and blooming trees and flowers are just the start of what makes spring a great time of year for getting out on your bike.

  1. It's not too cold or too hot, but just right. The refreshing weather is ideal for experiencing the outdoors by bike.
  2. Speaking of that extra sunshine, riding a bike helps replenish your body's vitamin D storage. According to UCLA Health, vitamin D promotes the body's absorption of calcium, which is essential for maintaining healthy teeth and bones. Calcium is also important to nerve cells, including the brain. You also can't beat the fresh air!
  3. Seasonal affective disorder is a real problem. While changes in the season and less daylight don't affect residents of the Golden State as much as other parts of the country, everyone can benefit from the mood boost riding a bike offers. Regular exercise, like biking, helps supports better health and wellness.
  4. Grab your family or friends or fellow faculty members, colleagues, or Bruin best buddies and get together for a ride! Biking is a super fun social activity. Riders can also learn from each other, everyone feels more confident, and it's safer as groups are more visible.
  5. Pedal past the pump and leave those currently high gas prices in the dust! If the distance to your destination is too great to reach by bike, try a pedal-assist electric bike, or combine your ride with a trip via public transportation.
