UCLA Transportation was awarded with the 2014 Governor’s Environmental & Economic Leadership Award (GEELA), California’s highest environmental recognition, on January 21, 2015 at the California Environmental Protection Agency (CalEPA) in Sacramento, CA.
UCLA Transportation, one of 12 organizations honored statewide, was recognized in the Climate Change category for its 30-year track record of accomplishments in planning, promoting and providing sustainable transportation programs to the campus community.
“30 years ago UCLA realized that we could rise above LA’s infamous car culture, addressing traffic congestion, air quality concerns, and quality of life issues on campus as well as in surrounding communities and beyond,” said Events and Transportation Executive Director Renée Fortier. “In doing so, we have significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, and the resultant impact on climate change,” she said.
With the assistance of UCLA Transportation’s innovative sustainable transportation programs, the campus has seen a 23% decrease in the drive alone rate to campus over the last 26 years. The department’s efforts have saved 103,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere over the last 30 years!
