A perfect hangout spot as we enter the season of warmer temperatures and longer days of sunshine is waiting for you to pop by this spring. The alfresco area intended to support community, commerce, and culture is on Broxton Ave, between Weyburn and Kinross Ave in Westwood Village. Now permanently closed to vehicle traffic, thanks to the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) People St Program, Broxton Plaza is open for walking, relaxing, and socializing.
A collaborative effort between the Westwood Village Improvement Association and LADOT, the plaza launched officially with a street party and ribbon-cutting ceremony on February 22, inviting UCLA Bruins, residents, other Angelenos, and out-of-town guests to come down to this revitalized part of the neighborhood.
Where cars once took up space is a dedicated gathering spot that aims to improve safety, walkability, and access to public transportation in the city environment.
Broxton Plaza’s 14,000 square foot open-air space— the largest pedestrian plaza of its kind in the City of L.A. — has enhanced features, including tables and chairs, games like foosball and a giant chess set, along with staging areas for performances. Surrounded by stores and eateries, Broxton Plaza will host music, activities, events, and other pop-up experiences. The space is already the place for a regular farmers market, outdoor movie screening series, flea market, and UCLA’s quarterly First Thursdays events.
“Supporting local businesses, hosting community events, and participating in celebrations reinforces the connections that make Westwood an essential part of the UCLA story," said Adam Tfayli, president of UCLA’s Undergraduate Students Association Council.
“Let’s use this space to strengthen our connections and celebrate the diversity and the energy that make UCLA and Westwood so special.”
